Multiple Exposures Gallery presents two new exhibits: UNSEEN/EXPIRED by Soomin Ham and Cub Run Pond by Eric McCollum. These exhibits may be viewed from May 10 through June 19, 2016. A reception for the artists will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2016, 2-4pm.

Soomin Ham's new work, UNSEEN/EXPIRED, presents photographs as ephemera… bringing to life images of Ham’s old film slides never seen before. Ham uses an experimental process in a traditional darkroom with expired photographic paper, outdated developer, and no fixer to create photographs with a short life – images offering only a fleeting a glimpse of places and time long forgotten.

Eric McCollum's show explores familiarity, simplicity, and the commitment to place in a series of photographs made over the course of a year at a small, suburban pond. Working in black and white, McCollum brings a sense of intimacy to a small, and easily dismissed, landscape.

Soomin Ham's solo exhibition Sound of Butterfly is currently being shown at Flashpoint Gallery through April 30. A reflection on her mother's journey through life, depression, and death, this body of work presents Ham's experimental approach to understanding memories and grasping loss.
Soomin's exhibit was recently reviewed by Washington City Paper's Louis Jacobson. He says,

The Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to present Treachery of Images: The White House, an exhibition by photographer Michael Borek, co-sponsored by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, on view March 29 – May 8, 2016. The opening reception will be held on April 16.
In this solo show, Michael Borek introduces sixteen new photographs of what seems to be the White House; one for each block of the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue address. The project borrows its title from Rene Magritte’s famous painting Treachery of Images (This is Not a Pipe), to remind the viewer that things are not always what they appear. In their serial and minimalistic rendition, the photos also pay playful homage to the typologies of industrial structures photographed by Bernd and Hilla Becher.

About the Artist
Michael Borek, a photographer based in Bethesda, Maryland, is originally from Prague, Czech Republic. His photographs from an abandoned lace factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania, were selected for juried shows by curators from the Corcoran, Whitney, Hirshhorn, Getty, and Phillips museums, and they were covered by the New York Times and Daily Mail. One of them also won second prize in the fine art category of the international competition of FotoWeek DC in Washington, DC. In 2011, one of Borek’s solo exhibitions featuring his works from this portfolio was ranked as one of the ten best photography exhibitions in Washington, DC, by photography critic Louis Jacobson. In 2012, the Maryland State Arts Council awarded Borek an Individual Artist Award and Grant. In 2013, the US Embassy in the Czech Republic presented a solo retrospective exhibition of Borek’s photography at the American Center in Prague, and in May 2014 this exhibition was shown in Pilsen, Czech Republic. In June 2014, Borek had a solo exhibition at the Czech Embassy in Washington, DC, as a part of celebration of 90th anniversary of death of Franz Kafka. In 2015, Borek’s photograph from his Treachery of Images series won the first prize in the Fotoweek DC competition Places of DC, and BBLA Gallery in the Bohemian National Hall in New York, NY, presented his project What Would Sudek Do? in a solo exhibition.

Timothy Hyde's new exhibit, Washington Daybreak, is currently on exhibit at the Multiple Exposures Gallery, from February 16, and be up until March 27. Please stop by on Sunday, February 28th, 2-4pm for the opening reception for the show.
Washington Daybreak is all new work by Hyde. It explores the notion of a particular time of day in a particular metro area—a city that also happens to be the center of the nation’s government. It is about Washington, DC starting its day.
Timothy Hyde has long been known for his night photography in exhibits and publications. In 2015, some of this work was published in his book with North Lights Press, “Approaching Darkness.” The consistent thread through all of this work is his assertion that familiar things are different at night, that scenes we think we know become less certain—maybe less knowable--when seen at night.
In many ways, the same things can be said about daybreak. Washington seen through the lens in the pre-dawn hours and at sunrise looks different than it does when viewed in the daytime. Maybe we can learn some new things about this well-known city.
Multiple Exposures Gallery presents two new exhibits: Mysteres de Paris by Danny Conant and Memories of the Present by Fred Zafran. The exhibit may be viewed from January 5 through February 14, 2016. An artist reception will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016, 2-4pm.

Fine art photographer Danny Conant presents an exhibition of new work at the Multiple Exposures Gallery.
Danny Conant presents compositions – layered, manipulated, edited to some degree – that speak to the mystifying qualities of Paris. The images were inspired by a recent trip to Paris featuring Cara Black, the author of mystery stories based in Paris.
Danny Conant lives in Montgomery County, Maryland and has exhibited her work in galleries throughout the US and abroad. Her work has been featured in magazines, newspapers and books by other photographers. She has two published books on Tibet, “Tibetan Journey” 2002 and “Vanishing Tibet” 2008. Conant is a member of Multiple Exposures Gallery and a juried artist of the Torpedo Factory Art Center and the Art League Gallery.

Exhibition of New Photography by Fred Zafran

Urban documentary photographer Fred Zafran presents an exhibition of new work at the Multiple Exposures Gallery.
In this portfolio of new photography, Fred Zafran presents an allegory of being, time and memory. The images in this photo essay are an exploration of, and challenge to our understanding and everyday conception of the world around us.
Fred Zafran lives in Loudoun County, VA and works in the DC metro area. He has traveled widely, and his photography takes place in towns and cities throughout the U.S. and abroad. Zafran is an award winning fine art photographer and juried artist of the Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC) in Alexandria, VA. He has exhibited his work at galleries in New England and throughout the DC metro area.
Multiple Exposure Gallery's annual Small Works Show is now on the walls through January 3, 2016. All of the work in the exhibit are small, no larger than 12" x 12".
Claudia Smigrod, Professor of Photography at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, The George Washington University, Washington, DC served as juror, making her selections from artwork submitted by MEG artists. Here is her statement:
It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to review the images submitted for the Multiple Exposures Gallery’s Holiday Small Works Exhibit. I was impressed with the variety of approaches and the high level of technical professionalism. In particular, I was drawn to the images that reinvestigated the existing subject matter. The strong use of light and color in these selected images speaks to the conceptual concerns of the photographers. There is a conciseness to the images that embraces the picture plane thus creating dynamic and strongly composed photographs.
The Small Works Show will be on view from December 1, 2015 through January 3, 2016
Congratulations to Fred Zafran and Michael Borek, who both received awards in the 2015 FotoWeekDC Competition. Fred's image was selected as the Curator's Pick in the Single Image - Fine Art category. Michael received the First Place award in the Places of DC competition.

Multiple Exposures congratulates Photo '15 award winners Francisco Gonzalez and Daniel Farnum.
Sarah Greenough, Senior Curator and Head, Department of Photographs, National Gallery of Art chose Francisco Gonzalez's image, "Expat Bin", for the Juror's Award. Multiple Exposure Gallery members chose the image "Open Fire Hydrant" by Daniel Farnum for the Gallery Award. Congratulations to both photographers!
