CURRENT EXHIBITION

JUST PASSING THROUGH | Fred Zafran | May 19 - June 28, 2026

Just Passing Through_04 | Fred Zafran

Fred Zafran returned to Japan in the winter of 2024 to photograph the small villages and snow-covered landscape of rural Hokkaido. He traveled first to Tokyo to spend time with an old friend. After a happy but bittersweet reunion, plans abruptly changed and the journey became a personal reflection on solitude and transience.

Zafran wandered the quiet, glass and steel corridors of Shiodome and the back alleys of Ginza, crisscrossing an uncertain space between presence and departure. The photographs that emerged are the landscape of a solitary traveler, luminous fragments of appearance, the lonely trace of someone just passing through.

Opening Reception at Multiple Exposures Gallery
The opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026 from 2 to 4 pm. Location — Multiple Exposures Gallery, Studio 7 on the first floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, VA.

About the Artist
Fred Zafran is a photographer of "the everyday," a careful observer of cities, small towns, and the places we inhabit. His photographs are quiet, poetic images that point beyond appearance to engage and challenge the viewer.

Fred is interested in the photographic essay as a distinctive means of visual storytelling. His essays are lyrical narratives, open-ended, suggestive, and often rich in symbolism or metaphor. A member artist of Multiple Exposures Gallery since 2012, Fred is a frequently invited lecturer and juror whose work has been exhibited throughout the DC metro area. He and his wife Shelley live in Loudoun County, VA.
