Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition of photography juried by Barbara Southworth.  The exhibition features the work of MEG member artists at our gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. The exhibit runs from November 29 - December 31, 2022.

Juror’s Statement - Barbara Southworth

Thank you for inviting me to select images to compose a MEG show.

While I can’t say each image neatly fit some implied theme, the images I selected have a certain flow as a group, and also share some qualities that pulled them together for me. A sense of mystery or ambiguity, perhaps created by a certain distance, lent by a quality of light, or implied by a feeling of solitude, emptiness or space – another word an aura beyond the purely visual subject, attracted me to the images I chose. Black and white or color, town or country, pure landscape or built and occupied, night, day or a liminal time, the scenes portrayed invite intriguing questions -Where is the place the leading lines convey me to and through? What situations, contexts, stories and subtexts do the images containing figures suggest? What of the gulf between what the photographer shows and what can and cannot be known, gleaned or felt by the viewer? The pictured settings aren’t observed from an intimate vantage point; rather they are seen at a remove, or with an encompassing spaciousness that situates the viewer as an outsider gazing in and on something immanent, though not completely articulated or explained, and herein lies appeal. Unmet gazes and atmospheric effects -soft focus, soft contrast, grain and halation, steam, mist, haze and motion, cloudy skies, glowing light, light on wet streets –hint at more than meets the eye.

About Barbara Southworth:

Barbara Southworth is a printmaking photographer known for landscapes celebrating color, wildness, and native diversity. Based in Alexandria, VA, Southworth received a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MS in Environmental Earth Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins.  She leads courses and workshops for the Smithsonian Institution and Northern Virginia Community College. Curious about earthly environments from large scale urban infrastructure to gardens, Southworth’s strongest affinity is for the life-enhancing powers of the least altered places. Her photography practice facilitates connections between people and land and she champions environmental engagement.

Southworth said of her selections for the MEG exhibition: "Black and white or color, town or country, pure landscape or built and occupied, night, day or a liminal time, the scenes portrayed invite intriguing questions.”
