Statement

The Francis Scott Key Bridge has spanned the Potomac River between Georgetown and Rosslyn, Virginia for just over a century. Some see it as an inconvenient bottleneck in their daily commute, some make it part of their daily running or biking route, and for others it is simply a backdrop to relaxing time in the parks along the Georgetown waterfront.

The architecture of the bridge recalls a Roman aqueduct with its five tall, concrete arches in the main span. As a photographer, I was first drawn to the bridge as a subject by the way sunlight, both directly and reflecting off the river below, illuminates the intricate arches. I have found myself returning often to the bridge to make photographs under different weather conditions and in different seasons.

The photographs in this exhibition were made over the last seven years, and to capture my impressions of the bridge itself, the people using it, and the environment around it
