A 3D SPRING EXHIBITION, MEG Group Exhibition Juried by David Myers

Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to share a new 3D group exhibition juried by David Myers.  Drawing upon his experience and the influence of past teachers, including Ernesto Bazan, Imogene Cunningham, David Alan Harvey, Connie Imboden, Karen Keating, and Tom Wolff, Myers thoughtfully assessed the 28 photographs included in the show and selected six for special mention.

"There were numerous outstanding images to consider for this exhibit. When reviewing them, I evaluated the composition, quality of light, and subject matter. However, what ultimately determined if an image made it to the final selection was if it left me with unanswered questions," Myers said.

The six images awarded special honors by Myers are:

Morning Guest | Irina Lawton | 1st Place
Window | Soomin Ham | 2nd Place
Rental Bed | Tim Hyde | 3rd Place
Bridgeview Auto | Eric T. Johnson | Honorable Mention
Hilltop Fog | Francine B. Livaditis | Honorable Mention
Yucca Rocks | Tom Sliter | Honorable Mention

About the Juror:
David Myers’ work typically addresses long-term projects and it often evolves from his travels and the desire to see, experience, interpret, understand, and return.  His work has been shown in a solo exhibit at the Hillyer Art Gallery in Washington, DC, and in group shows both in the United States and Italy. He has studied photography at the San Francisco Art Institute with Imogen Cunningham, among others, and in workshops with Ernesto Bazan, Jeff Jacobson, Raymond Meeks. Adriana Ault, Tim Carpenter, Gregory Halpern, and Brad Feuerhelm. His influences include, Bazan, Kouldelka, Perkis, Meeks, Carpenter, Fleming-Caffery, Gossage, Johannson, and Itribude; he takes a documentary approach to photography.

Myers is on the Board of Directors and Chairperson for Photoworks at Glen Echo Park, a non-profit arts organization. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington State University. He lives in Bethesda, MD with his wife, Krista.

The full exhibition is on display as a virtual 3D gallery through May 28, 2023. All images are available for purchase through the gallery at info@multipleexposuresgallery.com or 703.683.2205.

"INTERNAL LANDSCAPE" a New Member Exhibition featuring artists Irina Lawton and Clara Young Kim

INTERNAL LANDSCAPE a new fine art photography exhibition at Multiple Exposures Gallery (MEG), introduces Irina Lawton and Clara Young Kim, MEG's two newest members. Accomplished fine art photographers, each has a keen eye and an affinity for conveying connections between the natural world and our inner selves. Though very different in style, the duo's 23 images in INTERNAL LANDSCAPE explore these connections and bear witness to the beauty to be found in the space between inner experiences and the landscapes of the natural world.

INTERNAL LANDSCAPE is on display at Multiple Exposures Gallery from April 25 - May 21, 2023. An opening reception and artist talk will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 2 pm-4 pm (artist talk at 3 pm). Multiple Exposures Gallery is located in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, #312, in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Artists:

Irina Lawton
Irina Lawton is a visual artist living and working in the DC Metro area. Born in Latvia and educated in Moscow, Irina’s work reflects a wide range of influences and artistic styles. Her interests include the psychological intensity of portraiture, the sensibility and pictorial aesthetics of the turn of the 20th century, and the complex political and social consequences of change in post-communist Russia. Irina’s photography across these diverse areas of interest is linked in style and method by use of multiple layers of meaning to convey a complex narrative in a single frame.

Clara Young Kim
Through her photography, Clara Young Kim enjoys creating and sharing moments that strike a chord in viewer's souls. Born in Seoul, Korea, Clara began her study of music at age 4 and majored in voice at Yongsei University. Today, this musical background plays a strong role in Clara's way of capturing images and moments. She believes the elements of an image, including the colors, lines, shapes, brightness, and contrast, each contain their own notes and beats. When they work together in harmony, a beautiful image and work of art results.

Washington City Paper Art Critic Review of Sandy LeBrun-Evans's solo exhibition "Waters of SE Asia" by Louis Jacobson

Fencing and traps, Cambodia by Sandy LeBrun-Evans

Sandy LeBrun-Evans at Multiple Exposures Gallery by Louis Jacobson

Sandy LeBrun-Evans has been photographing since the late 1980s and early 1990s, initially using black-and-white and infrared film, and more recently digital equipment. During her career, she’s taken photos in Cuba, in ghost towns in the Western U.S., in the coal mining region of West Virginia, and most recently, at a working ranch in Wyoming. Last year, a friend asked her to join her on a visit to southeast Asia. “It was not a photography tour, so I had to look for opportunities as they arose and be ready to shoot when I found myself in the right place at the right time,” LeBrun-Evans tells City Paper. She photographed the colorful but fragile “floating” houses of Tonlè Sap Lake in Cambodia as well as in the Mekong River delta. But her most impressive images are the moody, misty seascapes from an overnight cruise to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. “I had to quickly jump on opportunities when I saw them and figure out a way to photograph around crowds of people,” she says. If there’s a common thread between these and her earlier works, LeBrun-Evans says, it’s fragility, both environmental and social. “An unspoken theme is the need to protect natural resources while also preserving cultural heritage,” she says. Sandy LeBrun-Evans’s Waters of SE Asia runs through April 23 at Multiple Exposures Gallery at the Torpedo Factory, 105 N. Union St., Suite 312, Alexandria. multipleexposuresgallery.com. Waters of SE Asia, a Solo Exhibition of Photography by Sandy LeBrun-Evans

Exhibition Dates: March 14 - April 23, 2023

Ha Long Bay Fishing Boat and Red Marker by Sandy LeBrun-Evans

Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to present a new solo show by Sandy LeBrun-Evan. Sandy LeBrun-Evans' exhibition, WATERS OF SE ASIA, shares the beauty, mystery and energy to be found in the waters of Vietnam and Cambodia. The included images, captured in January 2023, take us to three very different places:

  • Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, with its misty limestone monolithic islands

  • The Mekong River Delta and the largest river in Southeast Asia

  • Tonlè Sap Lake in Cambodia, where people live in floating houses

LeBrun-Evans' images draw us in with their vibrant colors and jaw-dropping landscapes, while also serving as reminders that like many places on our planet, pollution puts these waters at risk and protecting natural resources while preserving old and established ways of life is an important balancing act.

Exhibition Dates: March 14 - April 23, 2023

Gallery Hours: Daily 11am - 5pm

Opening Reception: March 18, 2023, 2 - 4pm

An opening reception will take place on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 2pm-4pm at the gallery. Please join us in Studio 312 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center to view the exhibition and meet LeBrun-Evans.

BEST OF Juried by E. E. McCollum

Exhibition: January 31–March 12, 2023

“Hard Rock Cafe” by Eric T. Johnson

In 2022, Multiple Exposures Gallery presented 9 new photography exhibitions – 4 solo exhibitions by photographers Tim Hyde, Matt Leedham, Van Pulley, and Tom Sliter, and 5 group shows, each featuring the work of up to 14 different photographers.

As we turned the corner into 2023, we asked noted photographer and art writer E.E. McCollum to jury a new show for us based on the images he most responded to from the 2022 group exhibitions. Today, we are pleased to share the eight images McCollum selected from 126 possibilities for our new BEST OF show:

Bad Habits — Fran Livaditis
Birds on Wire — Eric T. Johnson
The Doctor’s Hen — Fred Zafran
Hard Rock Cafe”— Eric T. Johnson
Silver Mist — Soomin Ham
Sighting — Fred Zafran
Yoga — Maureen Minehan

“Trying to pick the eight best photographs from the work of the rich and varied photographic visions of Multiple Exposures Gallery members proved challenging, to say the least. I easily could have chosen five times that number,” McCollum says in his juror’s statement for the exhibition. “I tried to choose images that satisfied my eye and that at least hinted at the diversity of views among MEG members. Some were whimsical (Maureen Minehan’s Yoga and Fran Livaditis’ Bad Habits) while others spoke of an ephemeral world (Soomin Ham’s Silver Mist and Fred Zafran’s Sighting). I couldn't look away from the young woman in Eric T. Johnson’s Hard Rock Cafe who seemed to have spotted Johnson just as he released the shutter. It was a pleasure to see the work of these talented photographers.”

Exhibition Details
The BEST OF exhibition is on display at Multiple Exposures Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center through March 12, 2023. It accompanies the GEHRY REFLECTIONS solo exhibition by Francine B. Livaditis. All images are available for purchase through the gallery. Each image in the exhibition can be viewed here

About Francine B. Livaditis:

Francine B. Livaditis is a fine-art photographer whose eye is drawn to architectural subjects. The long zoom lens on her digital camera allows her to clarify a chaotic visual scene into a quieter composition that emphasizes color, line and form. She exposes the beauty that hides in plain sight and controls the entire process of taking her photographs from capture to print in her Torpedo Factory Art Center Studio.

Specializing in abstract architectural images for corporate and residential clients, Livaditis took the photographs shown here in Las Vegas, NV and at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA. Livaditis also has captured architectural and industrial details in grand Washington, DC area buildings including the National Building Museum, Reagan National Airport, the Franciscan Monastery and the Center for Innovative Technology.

Five of Livaditis' black and white photographs were used as set design in the Hallmark film, Cupid & Cate. Her work is held by United Technologies Corporation, Washington, DC; Hyatt Hotels Corporation: Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, VA; the Washington Convention Tourism Corporation, Washington, DC; the State of Florida; McGraw Hill, New York, NY; TK Properties, Alexandria, VA; CableReps, Fairfax, VA; Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath, Washington, DC; the National Building Museum, Washington, DC; the Franciscan Monastery, Washington, DC; and private collectors worldwide. IN THE GALLERIES: THE HARSH BEAUTIES OF A GLACIAL SEASON, Washington Post Art Review By Mark Jenkins

“Intersection,” by Fran Livaditis, one of the 14 artists featured in “Winter” at Multiple Exposures Gallery. (Fran Livaditis)

Washington Post Art Review By Mark Jenkins

December through February are the cruelest months in “Winter”, a 14- contributor show at Multiple Exposures Gallery juried by noted photographer Craig Sterling. More than half of the 28 pictures are in color, but that’s not always easy to discern. The dominant hues are gray and various shades of white spun by snow and ice. Even the brightest blues tend to be frigid, whether gleaming in wind-chilled skies or literally frozen in ice floes. If the overall mood is not quite desolate, most of the photos depict some form of isolation.

None of the locations are explicitly disclosed, but a few titles indicate places such as North Dakota, Yellowstone National Park, the Jersey Shore and the ever-photogenic Iceland. Often the compositions center on a single structure — a remote house or barn — or a lone tree or small, denuded grove. People are rarely glimpsed, and, when visible, they’re dwarfed by the landscape. The exception is Tom Sliter’s intimate close-up of two skaters’ feet and ankles, in which only foreshortened shadows disclose the existence of the full bodies beyond the frame.

Both Fred Zafran and Clara Kim immerse the viewer in falling snow by positioning out-of-focus flakes like spots of soft white light in front of their subjects — a vintage brick building in Zafran’s photo and a huge tree and a small human in Kim’s. Kim captures a different sort of activity

with her picture of a freight train snaking through a mountainous landscape, shot as a long exposure so the train is blurred by motion. More typical, though, are such stark evocations of absolute stillness as Van Pulley’s study of trees swaddled in snow, Sandy LeBrun-Evans’s high-contrast image of a small structure framed by a rustic fence, and Maureen Minehan’s view of stakes partly downed by fierce weather.

Ice manifests as crystals in a pair of Francine B. Livaditis’s close-ups, as small bergs in a Matt Leedham seascape and as heavy icicles outside a window in an Alan Sislen photo that appears to be the only one taken from the comfort of indoors. For this show’s participants, winter is not simply a season to be observed, but a place that beckons to be entered.

WINTER, Juried by Craig Sterling MEG New Photography Exhibition

Exhibition: January 3 - January 29, 2023

"Before Sunrise" by Alan Sislen

Multiple Exposures Gallery (MEG) is pleased to present a new exhibition of photography exploring the theme of Winter. The exhibition, juried by Craig Sterling, features the work of 14 MEG artists. The exhibition is on display at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA, from January 3 - January 29, 2023.

When selecting images for the exhibition, Sterling sought to go beyond the most literal representations of winter: "I think John Steinbeck said it best: 'What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.' Winter can be both harsh and beautiful all at the same time," Sterling says.

About the Juror:

Craig Sterling is a fine art photographer and educator. Recognized for his sensitive black and white photography, Sterling’s work is held in numerous public, private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The National Gallery of Art’s Archive Collection, the Oakland Museum of California and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

Honoring Clifford Wheeler

“Sand Beach” by Clifford Wheeler

This year, Multiple Exposures Gallery (MEG) lost someone we loved. For 37 years, Clifford Wheeler was an unfailingly kind and generous member of MEG who made the gallery a vibrant destination for fine art photography.  A founding member of MEG, and a master at hanging exhibitions, Clifford installed hundreds of solo and group shows in our space at the Torpedo Factory, always using his keen eye and well-honed aesthetic sense to find just the right rhythm and order. He was also a fantastic fine art photographer, wowing us for nearly four decades with his varied solo exhibitions (e.g. Axes Bold as Love, Thank You, Steve Jobs, and Doors of Deer), and his wide catalog of images that reflected the diversity of his interests. Clifford wasn’t just a member at MEG, he was an institution.

Clifford passed away in October. In his memory, below we share a small selection of his images, and a short blog post in which he recounts, with his always-present humor, the lessons he learned in a photography class. We also share links to several profiles and interviews featuring Clifford and his work.

Clifford, thank you for all you brought to our lives. You will be forever missed.

MEG Photography Exhibition Juried by Barbara Southworth: November 29 to December 31, 2022

Image: "Sighting" by Fred Zafran

Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition of photography juried by Barbara Southworth.  The exhibition features the work of MEG member artists at our gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. The exhibit runs from November 29 - December 31, 2022.

Juror’s Statement - Barbara Southworth

Thank you for inviting me to select images to compose a MEG show.

While I can’t say each image neatly fit some implied theme, the images I selected have a certain flow as a group, and also share some qualities that pulled them together for me. A sense of mystery or ambiguity, perhaps created by a certain distance, lent by a quality of light, or implied by a feeling of solitude, emptiness or space – another word an aura beyond the purely visual subject, attracted me to the images I chose. Black and white or color, town or country, pure landscape or built and occupied, night, day or a liminal time, the scenes portrayed invite intriguing questions -Where is the place the leading lines convey me to and through? What situations, contexts, stories and subtexts do the images containing figures suggest? What of the gulf between what the photographer shows and what can and cannot be known, gleaned or felt by the viewer? The pictured settings aren’t observed from an intimate vantage point; rather they are seen at a remove, or with an encompassing spaciousness that situates the viewer as an outsider gazing in and on something immanent, though not completely articulated or explained, and herein lies appeal. Unmet gazes and atmospheric effects -soft focus, soft contrast, grain and halation, steam, mist, haze and motion, cloudy skies, glowing light, light on wet streets –hint at more than meets the eye.

Barbara Southworth Oct. 10. 2022

About Barbara Southworth:

Barbara Southworth is a printmaking photographer known for landscapes celebrating color, wildness, and native diversity. Based in Alexandria, VA, Southworth received a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MS in Environmental Earth Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins.  She leads courses and workshops for the Smithsonian Institution and Northern Virginia Community College. Curious about earthly environments from large scale urban infrastructure to gardens, Southworth’s strongest affinity is for the life-enhancing powers of the least altered places. Her photography practice facilitates connections between people and land and she champions environmental engagement.

Southworth said of her selections for the MEG exhibition: "Black and white or color, town or country, pure landscape or built and occupied, night, day or a liminal time, the scenes portrayed invite intriguing questions.”
